These are good guidelines!
- Healthy term newborns with no evidence of respiratory compromise will be placed and remain in direct skin-to-skin contact with their mothers immediately after delivery with minimal interference until the first feeding is accomplished, unless medically contraindicated, when possible.
- Breastfeeding will be initiated as soon as possible after delivery. Mothers and their infants will be encouraged to start breastfeeding within the first 1/2hour to 2 hours after birth according to the infant’s/mother’s readiness.
- Mothers will be informed of the presence of colostrum at birth and its value to her infant, the benefits of breastfeeding and the normal progression of milk increasing.
- Infants are to be nursed whenever they demonstrate signs of hunger such as increased alertness, activity and mouthin
- Mothers will be encouraged to breastfeed approximately 8-12 times in 24 hours. Infants should go on the first breast until satisfied and be offered the second breast as desired until satisfied.
- Mothers and infants will be encouraged to room together as much as possible and nurse according to the infant’s feeding/readiness cues
- Mothers are to be instructed that crying is a late sign of hunger and it is normal for babies to sometimes feed several times in succession for a few hours and then sleep.
- Mothers will be notified when their infants show signs of hunger while in the nursery.
- Mothers will be encouraged to rest when their infants are resting and breastfeed during the night.
- Exclusive breastfeeding will be promoted. Infants shall not be supplemented unless medically indicated. Breast milk shall be the supplement of choice when required
- Mothers requesting formula supplementation shall be informed of the importance and benefits of frequent breastfeeding and of the possible effects of formula supplementation on breastfeeding.
- Pacifier use in the hospital in the neonatal period should be limited to specific medical indications such as pain reduction, calming in a drug exposed infant, etc. Mothers of healthy term breastfed infants should be instructed to delay pacifier use until breastfeeding is well established.
- All breastfeeding mothers that are separated from their infants due to illness or prematurity will be instructed in how to establish and maintain lactation and will be assisted in breastfeeding when ready. Mothers will be encouraged to start pumping as soon as possible, ideally within the first 6 hours after delivery
- Mothers will be given pumping guidelines and instruction for milk storage and transport.
- All breastfeeding mothers will be provided information on determining their infant’s adequate milk intake, including the identification of swallows, ways to increase milk production, the technique of hand expression, management of engorgement, and the location of community support resources.
- Information will be provided on the renting of a hospital grade electric breast pump.
