The Nervous System 2

What’s important to note here is this: When the heart is beating at a normal or relaxed (slower) rate, the better blood circulation you’ll have and more oxygen your baby will receive. A single THOUGHT of fear, worry, can in an instant increase your heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate.

The Process of Labor

Your Pregnant Body

Familiarize yourself with all your body parts in the picture below. You may understand why you may be having:

) shortness of breath ) heartburn

) frequent urination

) pressure in the groin

) low back ache (due to poor posture)

Not seen in the picture:

) swelling in the ankles (because of retained fluid in your body- if you eat a salty diet, you’ll retain more fluid)

) numbing/tingling sensation in hands, back (fluid build up in your body puts pressure on the nerves and cause numbing sensations)

) leg cramps. To rid them, point your toes towards your KNEES – this stretches out the calf muscles

Vaginal Birth

As you watch this video, you may think you won’t be able to do this, but you will. Your body is constructed to do so! Hormones, bone structures are in place just for this incredible event. The only limitation you have is … you and your thinking!

The Stages of Labor

Labor is defined by 4 stages:

Stage 1: 3 phases: Early (dilation 0-3 cm), Active (dilation 4- 7 cm), Transition (dilation 8-10cm).

Stage 2: Pushing and delivery of baby

Stage 3: Birth of placenta

Stage 4: Post Partum

Dilation = the opening of the cervix.

Effacement = thinning of the cervix.

These 2 actions need to happen for baby to be born. These actions should not cause any discomfort. It’s the contractions that will cause discomfort.  Many women can de dilating for weeks and not feel a thing.  Dilation does not match the timing of contractions.

For example: Many books write that if you are contracting 5 minutes apart for an hour, you should be in Active labor – 4-5 cm dilated.

Not true. Contractions are not a measure of how dilated you are.

Placenta and Placenta Abruption

The first part of this video talks about the placenta and what it does for baby. The latter part talks about a medical emergency in pregnancy called “Placenta Abruption”

If you have ANY kind of vaginal bleeding while pregnant, see your heath care provider immediately to be on the safe side.

This video also lists how this may occur. If you don’t do any of the things mentioned, smoking drinking alcohol, etc., then your placenta should be pretty healthy!
